These photos are part of the Stone photographic series, “Talking machine interests animals at Seneca Park Zoo.” They’re held at the Rochester Museum and Science Center. The “talking machine” allegedly played a whistling tune with band accompaniment called “The Mocking Bird.”

The photographer Albert R. Stone started his picture-taking career for the Rochester Herald in 1903. The Herald became the “Times Union” and eventually the “Democrat & Chronicle” when Frank Gannett purchased it shortly thereafter. Many of these photos and variations were published in the Herald in two separate articles, 5 years apart. If I had been more diligent, I could tell you which are which.
